Here in this passage the Lord Jesus Christ tells of some servants that do what they are supposed to do. They don’t deserve great glory or praise for what they did because it was their job. They were supposed to do the things that they did. Now, anything over and above, then there is some leeway and perhaps some appreciation and thanks can be offered, but to do their job, it was their duty.
When a man scores a touchdown for example he thinks that he deserves some special treatment or praise. It was his duty to score a touchdown. The whole point of the game is to score more points than the opponent so as to win the game.
So many people now days want glory or praise for something that was their job to do to start with. If it was their job, they were supposed to do that.
So many times we think that we should have great praise for something that we as Christians should be doing anyway. Helping, encouraging, praying, giving, witnessing, reading the Bible, going to Church, and loving our brothers and sisters. We are supposed to be doing these things.
Our response to someone that would thank us for doing our job should be…
We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
Are you doing your duty?
