Why Many Won't Sing For Jesus

Our text will come from Psalm 51:14. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

King David has messed up with Bathsheba and in this chapter he repents. The King also had Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband killed to cover up his sin. No doubt he was thinking of Uriah when he wrote this passage.

So the idea of this verse from David’s standpoint is that if God would forgive and cleanse him from this terrible sin and the guilt that comes with it then he could sing praise to God. But at this time, he couldn’t. Sin has a way of stealing your joy and therefore you are not happy. If you are happy, you sing. If you are not happy and you don’t have a good relationship with God you’ll have a hard time singing for the Lord.

That’s still true today. If you haven’t repented of sins then it is awfully hard to pick the hymn book up and sing God’s praises. That’s why people don’t sing in church. They are covered with sins and they know as David did, that they are not pleasing to God.

Perhaps we could all learn lessons from children when it comes to singing.

Seek the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness and then you will be able to sing praises to God.
