When You Lose A Battle
Our text will come from Matthew 18:21-22. Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 18:22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Not long after this dialog Peter messes up bad when he denied that he knew the Lord–three times. Jesus had to deal with him one on one about it but the Lord forgave him and all was well.
Like Peter, there will be times you will mess up. Sometimes you will suffer defeat or a loss in a particular battle against the world, the flesh, or the devil or maybe a combination. No one is without flaw. The Bible makes it clear we are all sinners and come short of God’s glory. We sin because we are sinners because we are born sinners.
So how do we handle it when we suffer defeat?
First of all this thing needs to be taken to the Lord and repented of. Tell the Lord you are sorry and ask him to forgive you and to give you the strength to get the victory next time. That is, confess your sin. He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Proverbs 28:13. When you make a mess of things, you want mercy don’t you? Then confess your sins to the Lord and not to another person. That other person can’t cleanse you from your sins; only the Lord can.
Then forgive yourself. That many times will be the hardest thing to do. If the Lord has forgiven you then you forgive you and get up and go on for God.
Our text says we should forgive our brother 70 times 7. If you are a brother in Christ that includes you also. In other words you may sin or loose a battle on occasions but you can get true forgiveness on those same occasions if you want forgiveness and mercy.
May God give you victory over your losses, but keep going for God!
