What Water Baptism Will Do For You
Our text will come from Ephesians 4:5. One Lord, one faith, one Baptism…
Our text does continue to verse 6 but for our purposes we will utilize only verse 5.
In the Holy Scriptures there are 7 baptisms mentioned and yet here in our text we read that there is only one. So which one do we need and which one do we need to be concerned about? Many do not know and many say they know and do not. You need to get it right because it is the difference between Heaven and Hell.
I brought this point out to a couple of religious canvassers and they said it was water baptism. Well, is it or not?
To make this short we read in 1st Peter 3:21 that water baptism is “not the putting away of the filth of the flesh but the answer of a good conscience toward God.” So much for getting your sins washed away.
But there is one baptism that will do the job for us today and that is the spiritual baptism mentioned in Galatians 3:27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. You see, you have to be in Christ to be saved and only the Holy Spirit can put you there and this is not done through the city water company. It is done by believing by faith that Jesus died for your sins, was buried, and was raised again the 3rd day. Romans 10:9 says that if we believe this we will be saved. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
When you believe in your heart these things the Holy Spirit baptizes [immerses you] into Christ. By the way, to baptize means to immerse, not sprinkle.
See, it’s not that difficult. If you are self-righteous and want to get to Heaven by your own merits, it may be hard to believe, but it’s not that difficult.
So what does water baptism do for you?
It gets you wet---nothing more.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Galatians 2:8-9
