Victory in Jesus
Our text will come from 1st Corinthians 15:57. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Christian life is likened to many things in the Bible. A journey, a plant that grows, a child that grows up to maturity, plowing and sowing, a ship that is headed for port, and of course a war or battle.
Our text for today implies that we are in a spiritual war and the victory is in Jesus Christ and though many times we may fight and win some battles there will be times that we will lose some battles. You may try hard to fight the good fight of faith but try as you will, there will be times that you will get defeated and that is because you messed up somewhere along the way. Either you didn’t ask for God’s help and defense or you didn’t spend enough time in training or perhaps you just disobeyed orders. So you mess up. Now what do you do?
1. Confess your sins and don’t try to hide them. He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Proverbs 28:13. After king David messed up with Bathsheba he made this statement. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: Psalm 51:4. That’s where you make your mistake. You try to hide our sin and that doesn’t work. You will feel even worse. I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid…Psalm 32:5. Your battles will never be won until you acknowledge your sins and repent of them.
2. If your way is not working then make some changes to your plan of attack. There will be times that you will need to let Jesus do the fighting. You need to recognize that you can’t handle the enemy all by yourself. But…God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Romans 8:3. See, Jesus can defeat the enemy that we can’t.
3. You may be knocked down but don’t stay down. Fight a good fight. (See 2nd Timothy 4:7) Get up and keep fighting for Jesus.
4. Put the past in the past and press onward. Paul said this. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14.
The good news is though you may lose some battles along the way but the final victory is won by Jesus Christ. Follow his orders and keep on going for Jesus.
Regardless what we do and how we do it…we win.
The ole song Victory in Jesus goes:
I heard an old, old story, How a Savior came from glory, How He gave His life on Calvary To save a wretch like me; I heard about His groaning, Of His precious blood’s atoning, Then I repented of my sins And won the victory.
Chorus O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever. He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.
