Thou Hast Done Foolishly
Our text today will come from 1st Samuel 13:13. And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
King Saul in 1st Samuel was in trouble. He feared attack from the Philistines and didn’t know what to do. He hadn’t been able to ask counsel of the Lord through the high priest. So he took it upon himself to offer a sacrifice to the Lord. That was a big mistake. Offering up a sacrifice was something that only a priest of the tribe of Levi could do. So when Samuel finally did arrive and found out what Saul had done, he told Saul, “Thou hast done foolishly.” That is, he should have obeyed the Lord.
You see my friend, God has a order and a specific way of doing things. He wants us to go to Heaven. The way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ, God’s Son. It is through his death on the cross and his burial and his wonderful resurrection that we can have access to Heaven. No other avenue or way will do.
If you try to work your way to Heaven, it won’t do. If you try to be good enough to merit Heaven, this won’t do. If you try to earn your way to Heaven by being a great humanitarian; it just won’t do.
Some try to get to Heaven on being religious. That is, they think getting to Heaven can be achieved by being baptized, going to church, taking the sacraments, giving to the church, and being a member of a church. This certainly won’t do. Anything you may try to do to get to Heaven just won’t be near good enough.
If you try anything on your own outside of trusting Jesus as your way to Heaven…
Thou hast done foolishly!
