One by One
Our text will come from Hebrews 9, verse 27. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
I wanted to quote this verse in its complete form so you won’t miss read it. This passage is not a doctrinal statement like you find in Romans or Galatians. This is a comparative statement which is generally true, but there are exceptions.
The verse seems to indicate that it is appointed for everyone to die but as I’ve have stated there are exceptions, for instance, those in the Bible that will die twice that is, those that die in the Bible once and are resurrected and have to die again later. The scripture gives several instances for these cases. Then you have a man in the Bible (Enoch) that doesn’t die at all and never will die. Then you have those that will be alive at the rapture of the Church that also will never die.
The point is though… that the general rule is that we all will die. I’ve entitled this article One by One because that is the way death creeps up on most of us. Normally you don’t die at 5, 8, 15, or 20 years old and it is true there are exceptions but the exceptions prove the rule.
In my own life there was my grandparents, then my cousin,16, then some aunts and uncles, then some friends, some high school mates, and then more relatives—uncles, aunts, cousins, then a niece which I never saw and some nephews, then some really close friends, then a half sister, after her my mom, and now, a half brother. One by one is the way it has been for me. I suspect I’m not the only one that falls into this category.
It’s like death comes in closer and closer, sometimes back out, but then back in closer and closer until it gets to us which brings us all to the realization that it will be our turn so I would like to leave you with the most important question that you will ever have to face and deal with.
When it’s your turn to die and Mr. Death knocks on your door are you ready to meet the Lord Jesus Christ? One day you will meet him face to face.
May God help you to be ready when one by one death reaches you.
