Not of Works

My text will come from Ephesians 2:8-9. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

So many people think they can get to Heaven by their good works and yet the Bible makes it clear that the child of God is going to Heaven by faith and the grace of God.

If you notice our text verse 9 tells us it is not of works so you can’t boast. In Heaven they worship Jesus not each other.

Good works, charities, church membership, baptism, doing the best that you can are all fine but none of those things will get you to Heaven. Only Jesus can. Jesus said that he was the way. It was not of works; as a matter of fact at the judgment there are some that will speak or even boast of the things that they did as a means of going to Heaven. The Lord tells them he never knew them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7.

So works are fine as long as you don’t trust in them to get you to Heaven. Good works comes after you have the issue of going to Heaven settled. (See Ephesians 2:10). Then as a child of God you are to produce good works and then God will accept them as long as those works are done with the right motives.
