Living in the Past
Our text is from Philippians 3:13-14. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
This passage written by the Apostle Paul is one of encouragement to and for us to forget our past, regardless how good or how bad, and keep going on. So many of us try to live our lives in the past and never go on. How sad because trying to live in the past only takes away from our future. If you spend all your time looking back you will miss what is ahead and thus you may get off the track or worse.
I know a case where a woman lost her daughter over 10 years ago in a tragic auto accident and to this day she has a place along side the road where she keeps manicuring the area with pictures and flowers. It’s OK to remember our loved ones that have gone on but to get so consumed with the past that you just stop is very unwise. You can’t change the past anyway and to try is a waste of time, talents, and health. By trying to live in the past or by trying to remain in the past only shortens your future.
Our loved ones would not want us to just stop, and quit living. If they’re in Heaven they would want us to be preparing to go there and if they’re in Hell they will want us to avoid it at all cost. They would want their loved ones to get saved, and start serving the Lord.
You can’t do either if you just stop.
Today is here.
Will you waste it by thinking and living in the past or will you put it to good use?
We are to keep our eyes on the author and finisher of our faith and forget those things in the past and press on---not sit down.
Don’t let their passing be a waste, a loss, and a cause for your passing. Pick up where they left off and keep going for God. You will be glad you did. They will be glad you did and Jesus will be glad you did and He will reward you accordingly.
May God give you the strength to press on.
