He Has Your Back
Out text today comes from 2nd Samuel 21:17. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.
The context is David fighting in a battle. He is up in years now and not as fast and not as strong or in shape as he was in his 20s. Evidently he gets knocked down and his opponent thinks he has killed David but Abishai has his back and says, “Stay down; I’ll take care of this guy.” And from this point on David doesn’t actually fight in any more battles. He just wasn’t quite up to it.
Thank God for men like Abishai. We all need someone to have our back once in a while. We get down and tired of circumstances and sometimes it is good for someone to say, “I’ll take it for a while, you take a break.”
God did that for us as well. When we were lost and without hope we should have died and went to Hell. God came down in the form of a man and took our place on the cross and paid for our sins because we were just not up to it. In essence he was saying, “I got your back.” Truly God has our back.
Thank God for Abishai and those like him.
