Above the Law
My text will be drawn from Galatians 5:18. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Thank God for this passage and others like the following. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. Galatians 3:24-25 and in verse 26 it says, “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
As Christians we are no longer under the law but we have moved beyond it.
Now, what do I mean by that? Well, the law does a number of things to us.
It kills. Gal.2:19
It condemns. Rom. 4:15
Shows what sin is. Rom. 3:20
Shows you are guilty. Rom. 3:19
Shows you are a sinner. Rom. 7:13
Shows you are a big sinner. Rom. 7:13
Shows you are under a curse. Gal. 3:10
Makes nothing perfect. Heb. 7:19
So when I hear a man say, “We have to keep the 10 commandments in order to be saved” (Good luck with that!), I know that man knows nothing about the law.
You see, all those rules and regulations in the Old Testament on relationships, eating, dressing, building a home, sowing and reaping, and treating people and animals right were put in there because we are no good so they are given for our correction and instruction.
By nature we are all law breakers. Have you ever gone over the speed limit? See? You say, “No!” Have you ever told a lie? Yeaaaaaah! See?
The Bible tells you who the law was intended for. Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 1st Tim. 9-10.
When one gets saved he has a new nature and a new man in us (Jesus Christ) that is not subject to the law. That is, when we do things that are right the law is not against us. The law still works in our flesh and we still reap what we sow to it but the new man and the new nature that we receive when we get saved is above the law. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:24-23.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2nd Corinthians 5:17.
Praise the Lord! The law can no longer hurt our new nature nor the new man inside us.
Dear reader, if you have been washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, you are… above the law. Praise God; however if you’ve never been saved you are under the curse of the law. You are without Christ and have no hope.
Get saved today while you still have time. You won’t regret it.
