A Defiled Conscience
My text is from Titus 1:15. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
Defiled: unclean, dirty, corrupt.
A defiled mind and conscience is the result of sin. That is, the more you do a thing that is wrong, the less it bothers you. After a time it no longer is considered a bad thing at all. It might even be considered good for you. That is the nature of sin. As a result, you end up with a defiled mind and conscience to the point that you are not able to give advice on what sin is and what it is not. You won’t have that extra way of discernment of moral things.
Like radar that we can use to detect danger, the Lord gave us all a conscience so we would know what is right and wrong but if that conscience becomes hardened through sin then it becomes defiled and deadened to the point we become insensitive to sin. One may get so far gone that nothing they do will be acceptable to the Lord because they are so dirty that the Lord can’t use them. They won’t be able to do anything with a clear conscience and others will avoid them because of it.
I have been around some that every time you get around them they are telling some kind of dirty joke or making some kind of filthy gesture. According to our text even their mind is defiled. I try to avoid that sort of person. I don’t want my conscience to be defiled as well. Sin rubs off. It does matter who you hang around with.
May God help you to stay sensitive to sin and evil so he can continue to use you for his service.
